The Australian Society for the Perioperative Care of the Obese Patient is a bariatric anesthetic and surgical meeting group formed in late 2012 by a group of anesthetists and surgeons in Australia to meet the needs of the bariatric patient population. These patients pose a high anesthetic and surgical risk and require safe, high-quality surgery and a multi-disciplinary team approach. The specialists meet on a regular basis to discuss topics of relevance, particular surgical and anesthetic cases, research ideas, and potential ways of improving care.
