Nearly 100 years ago, WB Carrell, MD and a group of Masons saw a need for a charity hospital for crippled children and founded the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) - now a world renowned institution. As the Carrell Clinic approached its own centennial, its partners saw a new need and committed resources to establish a foundation dedicated to musculoskeletal patients.
The Carrell Clinic Foundation (CCF) is a Texas public charity that is an IRS approved tax exempt 501©(3) nonprofit corporation. It was founded in 2017 by the surgeon partners of the Carrell Clinic in Dallas, Texas. It is a completely independent foundation that is run by its own board of directors, and in no way directly benefits its founders. Although founded by Carrell Clinic surgeons, it exclusively supports its missions. The CCF provides funding for research, education, charitable care and patient advocacy in the field of musculoskeletal medicine.
The TSRHC patients who turn 18 years of age are generally no longer eligible for services at the children’s hospital. More than 600 children annually are aged-out from TSRHC, and half are underinsured or have no insurance coverage at all. This creates an enormous need for charitable assistance - a need not met by government assistance or TSRHC. As part of its mission, the Carrell Clinic Foundation assists these young people with amputations, spinal deformity and joint replacements due to juvenile arthritis.
William Beall Carrell, MD and Percy M. Girard, MD established the Carrell-Girard Clinic in Dallas in the early 1920s. The orthopedic clinic was initially located at 3701 Maple Avenue. In addition to general orthopedics, Dr. Carrell developed a deep concern for children with orthopedic deformities. He quickly became the driving force behind a campaign for a crippled children’s hospital in Dallas. His dream was realized in 1922 when the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children was built adjacent to the Clinic. This hospital has served Texas crippled children for almost 100 years.
The Carrell Clinic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Texas public non-profit foundation with the mission to support four important needs in the field of orthopedic and musculoskeletal medicine: Charity Care, Research, Education and Patient Advocacy.
