Irish-born Norma Cairns, licensed by the CDA in Dubai, has an Honors B.A. in Psychology from University College Dublin, Republic of Ireland and a Masters in Science in Counseling Psychology from Trinity College Dublin, Republic of Ireland.  With seventeen years experience, Norma’s focus in her practice with adults is on:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Relationship issues including codependency and communication
  • Couples and marriage counseling
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Grief

Norma also has experience of working with clients who presented with symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), stress, sexual abuse, borderline personality disorder, workplace bullying and conflict resolution.  She also enjoys working with existential issues.

Within her private practice in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, Norma was also an Associate of the FirstAssist (U.K.) and Bank of Ireland Employee Assistance Programs.

Practising in Dubai since late 2011, international and open-minded, working in an integrative, humanistic manner, Norma draws on her knowledge and understanding of CBT, psycho-dynamic theory, attachment theory, gestalt therapy, solution-focused brief therapy and subjective brief emotive therapy.  Keeping her clients’ best interests in mind, Norma adapts her therapy to suit her clients’ needs. Norma is also available to work with clients on Skype.

Norma believes that human beings have the potential to heal their emotional wounds and engage in the process of change if they are offered appropriate therapy and conditions. The role of clients in the therapeutic setting is a commitment to personal growth which can sometimes prove challenging, emotionally painful and very rewarding as they learn more about the nature of their thoughts, behaviors, emotions and their levels of self-awareness. Norma’s role as their therapist is to facilitate this process being empathic, non-judgemental and congruent throughout the sessions, sometimes working with humor.  Norma also recommends books when appropriate. As a qualified fitness and aquafit trainer, Norma informs clients of the benefits of a healthy level of exercise and healthy nutrition, as she believes both can contribute considerably to one’s psychological well-being.

Prior to completion of her Masters, Norma spent many years launching, marketing and co-managing an EU-funded cultural/economic audiovisual funding project, which involved extensive contact with the European audiovisual industry and much travel throughout Europe.

A fluent German speaker, Norma has also lived and worked in Germany, France, USA and Austria. She also has a good working knowledge of French.

Norma enjoys music, tennis, swimming, walking, aquafit, theatre, reading, cinema and fresh air!

To thine own self be true, Hamlet, Shakespeare
